(2 January 1836 - 19 February 1917): United States Census of 1870 |
![]()
This is a reproduction of the entry, in the United States census of 1870 for Garden Valley, Smith County, Texas (p. 28), for the household of John Calhoun Cox, taken 5 August 1870. In this record, his occupation is given as "school teacher." The value of his real estate is given as $940 (equivalent, in 2000, to $11,733.70); and the value of his personal property is said to be $482 (equivalent, in 2000, to $6016.64). In addition to Mr. Cox, the members of his household are enumerated as (1) Sarah (that is, Sarah Elizabeth ALLEN) 23 years of age, born in Georgia, (2) Della (that is, Della Amanda COX), 4 years of age, born in Texas, (3) Chloe (that is, Helen Chloe COX), 2 years of age, born in Texas (4) Carson (that is, John Carson COX), 6 months of age, born in Texas, and Walter BAZELL (sic) (that is, Walter BRASSELL), 22 years of age, born in Georgia. On the basis of what he was told, J. M. Taylor, the marshal by whom the census was made, has miscalculated the date of birth for John Carson COX as February 1870. John Carson COX was born 5 December 1869. Walter BRASSELL was the son of Helen Marr COX (ABT 1832, <Henry County>, Georgia - BEF 1870) and Jabez Marion BRASSELL (Sr.) (26 March 1824, Fayette County, Georgia - 2 September 1871, Scott County, Mississippi) who were married, about 1848, in Fayette County, Georgia. Walter BRASSELL was, therefore, the nephew of John Calhoun COX. In the United States Census for the third precinct (enumeration district 70) of Gonzales County, Texas (p. 462C), taken 5 June 1880, he is shown as Walter T(homas?) BRASSELL, a single white male, occupied as a farmer, 30 years of age, born in Georgia, with both parents born in Georgia. |
