GENEALOGICAL NOTES AND ANECDOTES JOHN CALHOUN COX: TEXAS STAR
In the United States Census of 1861, for Smith County, Texas, taken 1 September 1860, Peter Kolstad (or Kolstead) is listed as a resident of Tyler in the home of O(lavus) Kolstead (or Kolstad) and wife Nelly. Peter, age 63, his son Olavus, age 30, and Nelly Kolstead, age 28, were all said to have emigrated from Norway. Olavus and Nelly Kolstead are shown as the parents of Mary, one year old. Olavus and Peter Kolstead were reported to be occupied as watch-makers. The given name of Olavus Kolstad (or Kolstead) can be gathered from the United States Census of 1880 for Pleasant Hill, Cass County, Missouri. In 1880, Nelly Kolstad was still living. A son, Peter N. Kolstad, was born to her and Olavus Kolstad, in Texas, in 1861. In 1880, in Pleasant Hill, Missouri, Olavus and Peter N. Kolstad were both reported to be occupied as jewellers. The tag which, in 1861, the elder Peter Kolstad made for John Calhoun COX is stamped with the Masonic compass and square and it clearly shows COX to have been enlisted in the "5th Regt." of Hood's Texas Brigade. It served the same function as today is performed by the "dog tags" worn by military personnel, that is, a mark of identification.
