GENEALOGICAL NOTES AND ANECDOTES

ELIZA WEBB LUCAS
(1818 - 18 JANUARY 1883)

In 1911, William Wilson SLOAN published from memory his transcription of a hymn which — throughout his life — he had heard from none but his mother, Eliza Webb LUCAS. The origin and authorship of The Gospel Trumpet, as furnished here, are unknown. It is not the hymn of that same title the lyrics of which Charles Cole wrote in 1792 and the score of which E. J. King composed in 1844. But, of the poetry of Protestant triumphalism in the United States in the nineteenth century, this hymn is a fair example.

THE GOSPEL TRUMPET

Brethren, don’t you hear the sound
The Gospel trumpet now is blowing?
Men in order listing 'round
And soldiers to the standard flowing.
Bounties offered — joy and peace
To every soldier now is given.
When from toil and war they cease,
A mansion bright prepared in heaven.

The victory is not to the strong.
The burden’s on our captain’s shoulder.
None so aged, none so yound,
But may enlist and be a soldier,
Those who cannot fight nor fly,
Beneath his banner find protection,
None who on his name rely
Shall be reduced to base subjection.

Come, ye then, the cause is good,
Come, who will to the crown aspire.
In this cause the martyrs stood
And shouted victory, in the fire.
In this cause, we’ll follow on
And soon we’ll hear the wonderous story,
How by faith we’ve gained the crown
And fought our way to life and glory.
