FIREMEN'S CEMETERY (CYPRESS GROVE),
METAIRIE, LOUISIANA

The Firemen's Cemetery, also known as Cypress Grove, was originated in 1840 by the Firemen's Charitable and Benevolent Association (FCBA) after the volunteer fire brigade in New Orleans was replaced by the city's first regular fire department. In 1841, the remains of firemen who had been buried elsewhere were exhumed and re-interred at Firemen's Cemetery. The ground, located on Metairie Ridge at 120 City Park Avenue, was a major site for Protestant burials.

It was in Firemen's Cemetery that, on Sunday, 30 March 1851, William K. WILSON was interred, "under the clods," in Firemen's Cemetery (grave-number 46 west). About William K. WILSON, see From Tennessee to Texas: The Diary of Sarah Rebecca Lucas McClellan and the Letter of William Wilson Sloan: Texts and G0494A: William KELTON (Sr.), Note 36 in Antecedents and Descendants of Robert Kelton, Sr. (ABT 1724 - AFT 1791).

Below are three nineteenth-century stereoscopic views of Firemen's Cemetery, two of which show the wall-vaults by which the cemetery is distinguished.

It was Mr. John B. Windham who alerted the author of this web page concerning the existence of the records of the Firemen's Cemetery.
